How to Test RAM?
As you know, RAM memory is the type of memory that the computer uses temporarily but actively. Whether it’s the internal graphics card, the programs you use all use ram memory. A problem with RAM can cause your computer to get errors such as blue screen. If you are getting blue screen errors or crashes on your computer, it is useful to test your RAM.
Test your RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
- Press The Win+R
keys together on your keyboard. The Run window will open. Type “mdsched.exe” in the Open field and press the OK Button. - Or you can follow the path to “C:\Windows\System32”, right click the “mdsched.exe” program and run it as administrator.
- The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool will open. You can now start the test immediately by clicking “Restart now and check for problems (recommended)” to start the ram test.
- Because the memory test cannot be done while the computer is turned on, Windows runs the ram test by running the computer in diagnostic mode. The test consists of 2 stages. You can track possible errors during the test from the Status: section.
Test your RAM with MemTest86
For UEFI Bios: You can use the MemTest86 tool to test ram memory more thoroughly and professionally. After burning the MemTest86 tool to a usb stick, you should open your computer to boot this usb memory and use the tool. For this, you should have at least a 2GB USB memory stick.

- Download the memtest86-usb.zip file from the link above. Then plug in a USB memory of at least 2GB to the computer. Right click the downloaded archive and extract it to folder. Right click the imageUSB.exe file in this folder and run it as an administrator. (With this program, we will print the memtest86-usb.img image file to the usb memory.)
- When you open the program, the settings are ready. All you have to do is print your image by clicking the “Write” button after marking the flash memory. If the flash memory you inserted is not visible in the program you opened, you can click the “Refresh Drives” button. If the flash memory has appeared, we tick the box next to it. With the “Write image to USB drive” option selected, we write the image to the flash memory by clicking the “Write” button.
- After clicking the write button, you will receive some warnings that the data in your flash memory will be deleted. You start the process by clicking the “Yes” buttons respectively. When the image burning process is complete, “Imaging Completed!” message is displayed. You can click the “OK” button.
Using the MemTest86 tool by booting
Now it’s time to use our MemTest86 installed usb stick by booting. We restart the computer with our usb memory inserted. We try to access the boot menu by clicking the F12 key repeatedly on the keyboard. (Some computers enter the boot menu with F9, ESC, TAB keys. Some computers may need to turn off the secure boot setting.) Each computer and main board bios menu and boot menu entry is different. You need to learn how to enter the boot menu of your computer or motherboard by searching on the Internet.
- If you have managed to boot the flash memory, you will see a screen like the one below. If you wait 10 seconds here, the test will start automatically. Or you can reach the main menu by clicking the “Config” icon.
- You can also start the test by pressing the “S” key on the keyboard. You can also perform ram benchmark test by clicking the “R” key on this screen.
- The test phase and screen are as in the image below. The MemTest86 tool will test your rams in 4 steps. If you get errors, you can check it from Errors: section. If no error is received, the number will be zero.
You can repeatedly click the ESC key on the keyboard to exit the test. If you get stuck, you can specify it in the comments.
MemTest86 for LEGACY (Old) Bios: You can download the iso file from the links below and write it to the flash memory in MBR mode with the RUFUS program. So you can use memtest86 on old computers as well.
